National Industrial Classification: NIC Code For Manufacturing
The National Industrial Classification Code ('NIC Code') is a statistical standard that provides for the creation and maintenance of a comparable database for different economic activities. In order to determine and evaluate how each economic activity contributes to national wealth, this code has been created.
National Industrial Classification Code: NIC Code 2008
National Industrial Classification 2008 (NIC-2008) is the updated version of NIC-2004. In its Press Note 4 (2014 series), dated 26 June 2014, the Department of Policy and Promotion agreed to move from the NIC 1987 edition to the NIC 2008. Every Indian Company is advised to follow NIC 2008 since then.
NIC 2008 is more compatible with the international system of classification. This enables the compliance processes for registration to flow in a smooth manner.
The revised NIC-2008 provides a more contemporary industrial classification system. Activities of the enterprises are first grouped into 'Sections' alphabetically coded from A to U, each section is divided into 'Division' with two (2) digit numerical code, each division into 'Group with three (3) digit numerical code, each group into 'class' with 4-digit numerical code and each 4-digit class into 5-digit 'subclass.'
What is the use of NIC Code?
Udyam Registration: Udyam registration is the new process of registering business under MSME. To register as micro, small, or medium-sized businesses under the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprise Development Act, 2006, one has to apply for registration on the Udyam portal, While applying for registration on the Udyam portal, a NIC code needs to be submitted.
Company Registration/ LLP Registration: One must register the respective business / LLP on the MCA (Ministry of Corporate Affairs) portal to incorporate a business or an LLP. While registering, the company's NIC code is required.
Why NIC Code is needed?
- To ensure the appropriate classification of businesses. It is used by most of the Government Departments in India
- It is used to keep track of the commercial activities of a business.
- In order to obtain a Udyam certificate
- For Registration of a company or a Limited Liability Partnership (LLP)
